Natural Bridge State Park

Before becoming a state park, the bridge was privately owned for nearly 250 years. In 1774, Thomas Jefferson purchased it and 157 surrounding acres from King George III of England for 20 shillings.

The 215-foot tall bridge was carved out of limestone by Cedar Creek as part of the karst terrain created by erosion.   With 1,500 acres, today’s Natural Bridge State Park offers much more than the bridge. Find beautiful forests, rolling meadows, mountain vistas, the James River valley, and cascading 30-foot waterfall. Among the park’s six miles of hiking trails is the universally-accessible Cedar Creek Trail that leads from the bridge to the Salt Peter Cave, Lost River, and Lace Falls.

Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest

Poplar Forest is a plantation and retreat home in Forest, Virginia, that belonged to Thomas Jefferson, Founding Father and third U.S. president. Jefferson inherited the property in 1773 and began designing and working on his retreat home in 1806. Here, you’ll find award-winning, thought-provoking and meticulous historical restoration, both inside and outside the walls of Jefferson’s house, through archaeological discoveries and research that continues to uncover new knowledge about Thomas Jefferson and the free and enslaved people who formed the community at Poplar Forest. Poplar Forest was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1971 and is now operated as a historic house museum.

Virginia Military Institute Museum

From the mounted hide of Little Sorrel, “Stonewall” Jackson’s favorite horse, to the seven Medals of Honor awarded to VMI alumni, the museum chronicles the story of the nation’s first state-sponsored military college. Special exhibits on the career of Gen. George C. Marshall, VMI Class of 1901, known as the “Architect of Victory” during WWII and author of the “Marshall Plan,” and the world-class Stewart Firearms Collection are featured in the museum.

Maine Balsam Fir Products is a small company that hand-makes balsam-filled pillows and products.  Enjoy the natural and healthy fragrance of balsam as you learn how the owners started the company, how the pandemic affected their business and where they are today.  You’ll walk along the property to the balsam fir grove, see how they continue to make balsam pillows and other products.  And you’ll bring home one of the sweet-smelling Balsam fir bags as a souvenir.

Moose Watching Tour

We’ll meet a local guide for a two-hour moose watching tour. The guide will board our coach for a tour to nearby Grafton Notch State Park. Stop for photos at mountain overlooks and the local Artist’s Covered Bridge and locations most likely to spot a “gentle giant.”

Coos Canyon

Coos Canyon is a roadside park carved out of the Swift River. Erosion has chiseled steep cliffs on both sides of the river making for a beautiful view of the falls.  We’ll stop into the Coose Canyon Rock & Gift Store.

Height of the Land 

There are plenty of great views in Maine, but only one of them is the Height of Land.

Perched beside Route 17 in western Maine, the Height of Land offers you an expansive look at the sprawling Rangeley Lakes region and the mountains beyond. This viewpoint, on the Rangeley Lakes Scenic Byway, has been declared one of the finest in the state, if not New England.

Outdoor Heritage Museum

Learn about the wooden boats and steamers that travelled the lake and the hungers, fishermen and Native Americans who have flocked to the beautiful Lakes region for centuries.

Maine Forestry Museum

Dedicated to the celebration of the lumbering heritage of the Western Maine Mountain. A tour is provided here with fascinating stories of how the lumbermen made their living and the saws and equipment they used. You’ll also see a lumberman art collection and a bunkhouse.

Soar the Great Gorge, high above the racing Niagara River. Floral Clock

The intricate designs on the face of the Floral Clock are created with up to 16,000 carpet bedding plants and are changed twice each year. The planted face of the Floral Clock is maintained by the Niagara Parks horticulture staff, while the mechanism inside is kept in working order by Ontario Hydro. The tower at the back of the clock houses Westminster chimes that greet each quarter hour.

The Antique Boat Museum collects, preserves, interprets and celebrates boats and related artifacts to advance public understanding of the importance of boating to the cultural history of North America and the St. Lawrence River in particular.
Also included: a guided tour of the 106′ houseboat La Duchesse.  This houseboat brings the gracious River lifestyle of one hundred years ago to life. Haunted Happenings

Salem’s connection to Halloween begins with the tragic events that unfolded during the Salem Witch Trials. The 19 innocent victims who lost their lives in 1692 were not witches, they were only so accused due to Puritan beliefs of the time. The Salem Witch Trials were later revived with Arthur Miller’s 1953 work, The Crucible, and again in 1992 during the tercentenary of the events and the unveiling of the Salem Witch Trials Memorial. By 1982, the City has planned the first Salem Haunted Happenings Festival during Halloween weekend. The festival was an effort to provide family-friendly events for guests who were interested in visiting the “Witch City.” Following the first festival’s success with about 50,000 guests in attendance, the annual event has continued to grow each season, drawing everyone from families, couples, history buffs, and Halloween enthusiasts from all over the world.

Today, members of the modern Pagan and Witch communities have a home in Salem, where Samhain is celebrated each October recognizing the end of the harvest season and the coming of winter. The City’s modern witches have the unique opportunity of being able to share their beliefs and celebrations with both locals and out of town guests who come to celebrate the Halloween season in Salem.
